Situated just 40 kilometers east of Gangtok on the historic Old Silk Route, Tsomgo Lake (locally revered as Changu Lake) is an ethereal glacial lake resting at an altitude of 12,400 feet (3,780 m). Flanked by sharp, snow-draped alpine crags, the lake is fed entirely by melting glaciers and holds immense spiritual significance for both Buddhists and Hindus in Sikkim.
In the Bhutia language, Tso means lake and Mgo means head—literally 'Source of the Lake'. Legend has it that Buddhist lamas in ancient times studied the shifting hues of the lake water to forecast the future peace and prosperity of the kingdom. During winter, the entire lake freezes into a sparkling sheet of solid ice, while spring and summer paint the surrounding slopes with wild primulas, blue poppies, and iris blooms.
Visitors can ride the Tsomgo Passenger Ropeway—one of the highest cable cars in Asia—ascending to over 14,500 feet for jaw-dropping aerial panoramas of the lake and the distant Bhutanese mountain ranges. On the lakeside, colorfully tasseled Tibetan yaks with woolen saddles offer classic Himalayan photo opportunities and gentle rides along the perimeter.
